Rock On!

Rock On!

So you’d thought the guy with the classic Midas touch who had faltered with ‘DON’ would not make a comeback? So you’d thought the director with a genius lyricist’s blood running in his veins , can’t sing or act? Wrong and well, wrong again.

Starting from the slick trailors being shown on television to the promos put in theatres, ‘ROCK ON!!’ had kindled my curiousity enough to make me want to actually walk into a theatre and want to watch this movie.

The previous bollywood fest I had seen was ‘Jaane tu ya jaane na’ which was, well , let’s not get there! 😀

So I got to hear the songs of the movie much before I actually saw it. There was an instant liking to ‘Pichle saat dinon’ , soon enough I was addicted to this one and sang along everytime it was played.Oh, I forgot to mention Farhan’s singing skills. He sounds like Lucky Ali meeting rock music. Which is totally rad!The other song to which i had a instant attraction was ‘Rock ON!’ and ‘Sindbad the sailor’. Although sometimes it feels like the lyrics of ‘Pichle saat dinon mein’ doesnt make much sense, ‘Sindbad’ is full of inspiring lyrics and quite hummable too. It has been a while since I felt good after watching a hindi movie. Rock On brought that crazy grin on my face after a long long time!

Purab donnes the clown cap in the movie , and yes Arjun Rampal can also act! Shocking but true 😛

The angle of ‘the rift between 2 members of a thick gang of friends re-uniting’ might make one reminiscent of Dil Chahta Hai. But everyone has done a great job in acting in this movie. Heck , even Farhan has. This has proved that he is quite a versatile guy.

Of the recent bunch of movies I have seen, ‘Rock on’ clearly stands out.

PS: This is post #150! 😀

When indi rock was born

As a kid, I remember being glued to MTV in the 90’s as I was just getting acquainted with western music. Back then of course , I had no particular preferance of genres [although much later on I moved from the boy band phase to listening to anything under the sun].

The early 90s saw the rise of indipop. Artistes like Alisha Chinoy, Baba Sehgal, Biddu, Shaan and Saagarika and Sunita Rao carve out something new and different to a generation which was only used to filmy music. Sometime around this timeframe was when I’d heard ‘Trapped’ by Indus Creed for the first time.

Back then I remember not understanding much of the video, but I really did like their sound. They had something unique unlike most indi rock wannabe bands who sound pseudo-white angry rockers filled with angst. It saddens me that Indus Creed faded away into obscurity when bands like Parikrama [which are not quite as good as them , are still in the news] Of course parikrama goes from place to place mostly playing cover versions of time tested rock anthems like ‘Highway to hell’ and ‘Another brick in the wall’, but their own songs have not impressed me to any extent.

Apart from Indus Creed, I feel no other indi rock band has done a good job singing in english. Even the sounds of Junkyard Groove seem ordinary to me. A lot of regional bands have mushroomed since the rock revolution hit India. One of the most popular ones being Avial. Yes I really like thier sound and have made n number of references to them in my previous posts, but they are totally worth it.

Here’s to indus creed.

Hope you guys make a comeback soon.

Indirock needs you!

One of the most underrated songs, ever.

It was sometime in the early 2000’s, when I had popped in a CD that belonged to a friend of my sister’s into my stereo system. Starting from the tilting melody that starts the track to the melancholic end , U2’s ‘Electrical Storm’ had me in complete rapture.  This track was probably released a whole lot earlier before the time I got to listen to it the first time, but wow, what a song!

I then happened to watch the video of the song on TV, [yes the one with a much younger Larry Mullen jr and a mermaid] and liked it too.  Following are the lyrics of the song. If you are a U2 fan, you will really like this one, trust me! 😀

U2 – Electrical storm

The sea it swells like a sore head
and the night it is aching
Two lovers lie with no sheets on their bed
And the day it is breaking

On rainy days we’d go swimming out
On rainy days swimming in the sound
On rainy days we’d go swimming out

You’re in my mind all of the time
I know that’s not enough
If the sky can crack there must be someway back
For love and only love

Electrical Storm
Electrical Storm
Baby don’t cry

Car alarm won’t let you back to sleep
You’re kept awake dreaming someone elses dream
Coffee is cold but it’ll get you through
Compromise that’s nothing new to you.
Let’s see colours that have never been seen
Let’s go places no one else has been

You’re in my mind all of the time
I know that’s not enough
Well if the sky can crack there
must be someway back
To love and only love

Electrical storm [ x3 ]
Baby don’t cry

It’s hot as hell, honey in this room
Sure hope the weather will break soon
The air is heavy, heavy as a truck
We need the rain to wash away our bad luck

Well if the sky can crack there
must be some way back
To love and only love

Electrical storm [ x3 ]

Baby don’t cry [ x3 ]

Listen without prejudice

Nopes, I am not here to talk about George Micheal’s album of the same name [Which was a gud album, nonetheless :-D]. Often I have wondered about the varied different styles and genres of music. Some , I fell in love with at the first sound, and others took a while to sink into my system and made it like a gradual liking.

I tried so hard to get back to listening and following Tamil film music and hindi film music as well. But the grotesque shelved out in the name of music is ,, aaaah …. the horror ….. :-O ..

G.V Prakash is someone who’s music is worth listening to. As far as Yuvan Shankar Raja’s music goes, it is awesome , as long as he doesnt sing tracks 😐

And what on earth has happened to A.R Rehman? The mastermind behind work like Roja, Bombay, Duet, Alaipayuthey has severely stooped in standards 😦 I remember the shock that engulfed me when I heard “Oru Koodai Sunlight” . it cant be rehman!!!! I thot :-O

Due to many limitations, I take my pathetic radiomoto to work and have to switch stations to keep myself sane. Radio One caught on the hacksaw trend a little too late. Radio Mirchi’s ingenious discoveries of Mokka Mohan and Matter Manickam have been plagiarised to the CORE. Radio One has one too many such segments, it irks me to the limit!

  • Rock n Roll Anachi
  • Harry Potter-um Kollywood Staargalum
  • Doctorrrrr
  • The Police Story

If the above 4 are funny, then I am Marilyn Monroe 😐

Listening to radio has become annoying. Big 92.7 fm truncates the first and last minute of every song they air. And give very generous prizes like 10% discount coupons, 2% discount coupons etc. I have stopped listening to AIR ,because the signal of the oldest station in Chennai has become the weakest too.

What is up with that YogiB guy .. he is picking some of IRs numbers and making a blasphemous chimera of sort. This is with reference to both Madai thiranthu as well as Engayum [which happens to be an MSV composition]**  epothum… Sheesh .. Sometimes I feel indi rockers and rappers are mostly just pathetic wannabes. I heard some guy cpla years ago [apparently lead singer of a wannabe rock band] faking the american accent while doing a cover of “Struggle within”! Imagine that ! X-(

On a totally different note, you guys must try listening to Avial. These guys make malayalam rock. I happened to have seen their only video to be aired, which was “Nada nada”, in my final year of college. Then I chanced upon thier MySpace page. … do lend a ear to “Adu Pambeh” … I am addicted to it. I particularly love the bass guitar’s strong presence in the track as well the use of the banjo.

I am looking for a track called “Trapped” by Indus Creed. Do any of you guys have it? If so do mail me the song at teal@cooltaurus.com

**Thanks Ram 😉

Michael Buble’s Everything!!!

You're a falling star
You're the getaway car
You're the line in the sand
When I go to far
You're the swimming pool
On an august day
And you're the perfect thing to say

And you play it coy but it's kinda cute
Oh when you smile at me you know exactly what you do
Baby don't pretend that you don't know it's true
Cause you can see it when I look at you

And in this crazy life
And through these crazy times
It's you
It's you
You make me sing
You're every line
You're every word
You're everything

You're a carousel
You're a wishing well
And you light me up
When you ring my bell
You're a mystery
You're from outer space
You're every minute of my every day

And I can't believe that I'm your man
And I get to kiss you baby just because I can
Whatever comes our way

We'll see it through
And you know that's what our love can do

And in this crazy life
And through these crazy times
It's you
It's you
You make me sing
You're every line
You're every word
You're everything

And so la la la la
So la la la la

And in this crazy life
And through these crazy times
It's you
It's you
You make me sing
You're every line
You're every word
You're everything

You're every song
And I sing along
Cause you're my everything

Yeah, yeah

So la la la la
So la la la la

J’s Galore!

Filed under: Music — Teal @ 8:11 pm

So finally decided to put a post on two of my favorite artistes of all time. My playlist almost includes either all of their songs or a handful of theirs , repeated beyond count :-P]
I have always had a love for the guitar and somehow never got to lay my hands on one, until now. Not that my guitar is a custom made stratocaster, but i am make doing with a simple Givson Crown, which is a rocking choice for beginners. Someday will get me one of ’em Les Pauls [and no, I aint kidding!!!!]
JOE SATRIANI=GUITAR GOD
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The reason why I am mentioning him first is because of all the artistes listed in this post, I heard him the first. Long long ago, back in the days of Times FM on 107.1, when Nikhil Chinnappa was an RJ here in Chennaipattinam – when chennai or rather india in itself was new to cable television, I used to fervently listen to this particular station between 7-9pm.
7-8 was a call in session, where in we could request for songs, and make dedications. IT was sometime between 5th and 6th standard, which was quite a long time ago!
[Considering that I am working now.] Heard a composition of his called “Love Thing” for the first time that summer, and fell madly in love with his sound, not to mention the track.
Some of my other favourites of his include – “Rubina’s blue sky happiness”, “Crystal Planet”, “Flying in a blue dream”, and “The Extremist”.
Thala pola varuma?
JOHN MAYER~ **SIGH**
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Not only is this guy blessed with talent, he is also pretty good looking. [yeah yeah many may beg to differ, but this is my blog not urs 😛 ] . Heard him first crooning “Your body is wonderland” a couple of years back. Wasnt that impressed. Thought to myself, this kid wont last, he is one of ’em one hit wonders. But boy , did he prove me wrong or what?
He might not be a commercial success, but he has gained quite a fan following across the globe.
His latest album titled “Continuum” has recieved rave reviews, and has shown how much maturity he has acquired as a musician.
Some of my favourites of his include – “Bigger than my body”, “No Such Thing”, “Clarity”,”Only Heart”, “Neon” , “Home Life”,”Belief”,”Stop this train”,”Waiting on the world to change”.
[I know I might have as well put “The complete works of John Mayer” , but he aint done yet]
Hopin to hear more gr8 music from these two favourites of mine in the years to come!

No Such Thing …

Filed under: Music — Teal @ 9:56 am

Welcome to the real world, she said to me
Condescendingly
Take a seat, take your life
Plot it out in black and white
Well I never lived the dreams of the prom kings
And the drama queens
I'd like to think the best of me
Is still hiding up my sleeve

They love to tell you
Stay inside the lines
But something's better
On the other side

I wanna run through the halls of my high school
I wanna scream at the
Top of my lungs
I just found out there's no such thing as the real world
Just a lie you've got to rise above

So the good boys and girls take the so called right track
Faded white hats
Grabbing credits and maybe transfers
They read all the books but they can't find the answers
And all of our parents
They're getting older
I wonder if they've wished for anything better
While in their memories
Tiny tragedies

They love to tell you
Stay inside the lines
But something's better
On the other side
I wanna run through the halls of my high school
I wanna scream at the top of my lungs
I just found out there's no such thing as the real world
Just a lie you got to rise above

I am invincible
I am invincible
I am invincible
As long as I'm alive

I wanna run through the halls of my high school
I wanna scream at the
Top of my lungs
I just found out there's no such thing as the real world
Just a lie you've got to rise above
I just can't wait til my 10 year reunion
I'm gonna bust down the double doors
And when I stand on these tables before you
You will know what all this time was for ...

Teal’s note: Any details about the location of the above mentioned person will be appreciated and duly rewarded. These lyrics are from the track ‘No Such Thing’ from ‘Room for Squares’. For those of you who dont know who this cutie is, well he is John Mayer.
Congrats you can hang yourselves now. 😛
